Vasectomy

Vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure that involves cutting or blocking the vas deferens to prevent sperm from entering the ejaculate and thereby prevent pregnancy.

The procedure is typically performed in an outpatient setting with the use of local anesthesia. During the procedure 1 or 2 small incisions are made, allowing a surgeon access to the vas deferens. The vas deferens is then cut and sealed by a combination of clipping, stitching, or cauterization (burning).

As a method of birth control, vasectomy offers many advantages. It is a highly effective one-time procedure that provides permanent contraception. Compared to female sterilization, vasectomy is less expensive, simpler, has a higher success rate and a lower incidence of complications.

Although it is possible for a vasectomy to be surgically reversed at a later time, it should be considered a permanent form of sterilization. Vasectomy reversal can be highly successful; it can be expensive, difficult and ultimately unsuccessful.
